About Mahi Mahi fishery

After 10 years of executing a fishery improvement project (FIP), the Ecuadorian longline mahi-mahi artisanal fishery, on February 26, entered on a process of formal evaluation under the sustainable fisheries standard of the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC), which is the most prestigious and rigorous eco-labeling program for fish products in the world.

Improved processes for collecting and analyzing fisheries and biological information.

Training program for fishermen on best practices to mitigate bycatch (ongoing activity).

Official adoption of the mahi mahi plan, closure, minimum size, fiber towing limit per nurse.

Issuance of 5 ministerial agreements since 2011, to manage fisheries, establishing and ratifying measures.

iattc scientific staff led a regional scientific initiative.

Increase the number of inspectors and observers on board and train national technicians.

Replacement of “orinques” to reduce sea turtle entanglement in the longline mother line.

Change of circle hooks to jack hooks, elimination of import tariffs for circle hooks.
