FIP Ecuador Mahi Mahi Longline Releases Human Rights and Social Responsibility Statement

Ecuador – July 2025

The Ecuador Mahi Mahi Longline FIP, led by Conservation Mahi Mahi, proudly announces the release of its Human Rights and Social Responsibility Statement—a major step toward building a sustainable and socially responsible fishery in Ecuador.

The document, endorsed by the main FIP participants—including fishing companies FRIGOLAB, DOCAPES, PROPEMAR, and FRESH FISH—establishes the principles, responsibilities, and international standards that will guide labor conditions and human rights protections throughout the mahi mahi (Coryphaena hippurus) supply chain.

🔍 What does the statement cover?

The statement is grounded in international frameworks such as the United Nations Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights (UNGPs) and the Work in Fishing Convention (C188) from the International Labour Organization (ILO). Key commitments include:

  • Prohibiting forced labor, harassment, abuse, and discrimination
  • Eliminating child labor and ensuring safe, decent conditions on board
  • Upholding workers’ rights to organize, bargain collectively, and report grievances without retaliation
  • Promoting fair wages, legal contracts, and access to basic services and healthcare in the workplace

🤝 A collective commitment

Each participating organization has taken on specific responsibilities to ensure these principles are upheld. As FIP lead, Conservation Mahi Mahi will disseminate the statement and monitor its implementation. Participating companies will provide training, improve labor policies, and foster effective communication channels with workers.

🌊 Sustainability beyond the resource

This commitment reinforces the FIP’s vision that true fisheries sustainability cannot be achieved without social justice. Addressing human rights risks is essential not only for conserving marine resources but also for protecting the well-being of fishing communities that depend on them.
